Staying afloat in a Commission-based industry
Commissions are the name of the game. But most real estate agents would struggle in sales very early in their careers. Dustin Brohm was not spared this reality. He says that he was almost on the brink of giving up but stayed on because he had no other options.
In order to get commissions from sales, a license is needed. But according to Forbes, a shocking amount of new licensees fail and leave the business within the first two years. Hence, “in order to protect the public, a licensed broker is required to hold the license of the salesperson and supervise them for at least three years before they can become a broker themselves.” However, the broker also gets a commission from your commission for supervising and overseeing this risk. The deals can differ in the form of either a monthly fee, a fee from their earned commissions, or a combination of the two. Still, not everybody can be lucky to get a broker who is able to mentor and train. Dustin was among the unlucky ones.
Be A Marketer that Sells Real Estate
After struggling with sales for so many years, Dustin clawed his way out and in the process by shifting his mindset. He discovered content marketing earlier. He then started implementing the social media and online marketing strategies he learned along the way and helped hundreds of real estate agents and mortgage loan officers to get more business through lead generation.
His passion for digital marketing is ignited and he learned along the way. “Experience is the greatest teacher,” he says. Dustin says that marketing should be in your strategy since the very start so that you can be a marketer “who happens to sell real estate.”
There is no question that the traditional deals and schemes in the real estate industry work but it is not for everyone. For the rest, it’s important to always take care of yourself. Dustin says to not rely too much on your team leaders but that it’s important to find the support system you need in a mentor or business partner.
